When Chris Nicol first brought Hoopnics Basketball Camp from Westlock, Alberta to Creston over ten years ago, the goal was straightforward: build a summer environment where local youth could work on fundamental skills without losing the joy of the game. A decade later, that foundation remains, but the camp is entering its next chapter under a familiar name.
Now led by Josh Nicol—a local teacher, former collegiate athlete, and head coach—the camp continues to serve as a bridge for players aged 8 to 18 looking to refine their game before the upcoming school year.
For Nicol, who is currently completing a Master of Education in Coaching Studies, returning each summer isn’t just about running drills; it's about applying modern, research-based sports pedagogy to a local gym. The focus remains on core fundamentals—ball handling, spatial movement, defensive posture, and decision-making—delivered with personalized feedback rather than generic group instruction.
What makes the initiative a staple of the Kootenay summer schedule is its local feedback loop. The coaching roster routinely features current and former Kootenay River Secondary School (KRSS) Senior players, offering younger participants relatable role models who have walked the same path. Additionally, a portion of the camp's proceeds is funneled directly back into local basketball programming, keeping the ecosystem self-sustaining.
Rather than a high-pressure showcase, the camp balances rigorous physical training with a supportive, character-driven culture, ensuring athletes walk off the court with sharper skills and a renewed passion for the sport.
